A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
